Gilia

Gilia capitata ssp. capitata

Gilia capitata ssp. capitata

Gilia is an extremely complex genus of at least 38 species of annuals found in North America and South America.  Once a catch-all genus the genus began to be broken up beginning in the 1950’s.  Members of Gilia as of 1950 are now found in Aliciella, Allophyllum, Bryantiella, Eriastrum, Giliastrum, Ipomopsis, Lathrocasis, Linanthus,  Loeseliastrum, Microgilia, Navarretia, and Saltugilia. These nomeclatural changes have been strongly supported by molecular evidence.

Biogeography

Gilia is most diverse in the Mojave Desert. As with many other Polemoiaceae is is disjunct between North America and South America.
